Expressing Your Faith

One of my best friends when I was growing up transferred to a private school when we were in eighth grade. It was the kind of private school where you wore navy, grey, white or beige. This was kind of shock for my friend. See it was the early 1990's when colorful clothes were everywhere. The Fresh Prince of Bell Air was wearing multi colored silk shirts and hot pink was the it color for girls in our school. My friend was so disappointed with the move and the idea of the uniforms made her hate her parents even more for their decision.
Her mother came up with this plan to help ease her pain. She explained that although she could no longer "express" herself through the colorful clothes that they would make a trip to the mall and buy the most outrageous and colorful earrings that they could find. (The school didn't have a policy on the color or style of earrings). As a result, my friend had so many unusual earrings that she became known for having crazy earrings. She had ones that looked like birds, cherries, large dangle ones, and bright multi colored ones.
When I think about expressing yourself, my mind always drifts back to those bright silly earrings that she wore. It was a part of her and what she wanted people to know about her. She wanted them to know that she was more than the drab navy skirt and the white shirt. She was exciting and fun.
Expressing yourself through your clothes can be fun and let people know what kind of person that you want to be. Can we also express our faith so that people immediately know what kind of person that Christ wants us to be?

Galatians 5:6 - The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
